A range of measures prior to the cutting of forest stands for harvesting and sanitary purposes or prior to the clear-cutting of stands for the laying tracks, power lines and other infrastructure.            

Experts demarcate areas and mark trees for felling. Forest survey involves recalculating the quantity and quality of the forest: determination of the size (height, diameter), age, breed, number of growing trees, stock of wood and its annual increase for the logging. 

The procedure and rules for conducting the marking-cut a coupe and forest survey are regulated by the Forest Code of the Russian Federation  (art.23.3).  These works can be carried out only by certified experts.

What types of cuttings exist and when are they carried out? 

The Forest Code divides forest cuttings into two forms - select and clear cuttings. The first option implies partial felling of trees in a certain area, the second implies full cutting. The clear cutting requires designing a forest and reforestation.

In cases where clear cutting is necessary for the construction of the route, roads, pipelines, power lines, trees of any age can be cut down. This type of logging is strictly prohibited in the state natural reserves, where no human interference with natural processes is allowed.
